TikTok Shop Brand Authorization: Fixing the Missing Error

Delzonic

Short answer: “Missing brand authorization” means TikTok has matched your listing to a registered brand and cannot see permission for you to sell it. You fix it by uploading a document chain that connects the brand owner to you, usually a brand authorization letter naming your shop, plus invoices from an authorised distributor. Generic supplier invoices and product photos do not resolve it, which is why sellers get stuck in a loop reuploading the wrong evidence.

This error catches two very different sellers. One is a legitimate reseller who bought stock through a distributor and never thought about paperwork. The other is a dropshipper listing a branded product they have no relationship with at all. The first case is solvable. The second usually is not, and it is worth being clear about which one you are in before spending a week on it.

What triggers a brand authorization requirement?

TikTok maintains a brand registry. When a brand enrols, listings that reference it by name, logo, packaging or model number get matched and gated. The match happens on several signals at once, which is why sellers who carefully avoided the brand name in the title still get flagged. The images, the specifications and the product identifiers all get read.

The gate can appear at three moments. At listing, where the product simply will not publish. Post-listing, when a registry sweep catches existing inventory. Or after a rights-holder complaint, which is the most serious version because it arrives attached to a violation record.

How it appears What it means Urgency
Cannot publish listing Pre-emptive gate, no penalty yet Low, fix before selling
Existing listing delisted Registry sweep caught it Medium, revenue stopped
Violation record attached Rights-holder complaint filed High, affects shop health
Repeat complaints Escalating enforcement Critical, suspension risk

What documents actually satisfy it?

TikTok is looking for an unbroken chain from the brand owner to your shop. Every link has to be visible.

A brand authorization letter. This is the core document. It has to come from the brand owner or an authorised agent, name your shop or legal entity specifically, state the products or categories covered, carry a validity period, and be signed with company details. A letter addressed to your supplier rather than to you does not complete the chain.

Purchase invoices. Invoices from an authorised distributor showing the brand name, your entity as buyer, quantities and dates. The brand has to appear on the invoice. This is where most rejections happen, because supplier invoices frequently list generic descriptions rather than brand names.

Trademark evidence if you own the brand. If it is your own brand, the trademark registration certificate plus proof the registrant is your entity resolves it directly, and is the cleanest version of this whole situation.

Distributor chain documents. If you buy from a distributor rather than the brand, you may need the brand’s authorization to that distributor plus the distributor’s authorization to you.

Why the same upload keeps getting rejected

The most common failure is a document that proves you bought the product but not that you are permitted to sell it. Those are different claims. An invoice establishes a purchase. An authorization letter establishes permission. Reviewers need both, and uploading three more invoices when the missing piece is the letter will fail every time.

How do you get an authorization letter?

Ask the entity you actually buy from, and be specific about what you need. Vague requests get vague documents that fail review.

Tell them it must name your shop or legal entity, list the product categories, include a start and end date, and be on company letterhead with signature and contact details. Say explicitly that it is for TikTok Shop brand authorization, because most distributors have issued these before and know the format.

If your supplier cannot or will not provide one, that answer is information. A distributor genuinely authorised by a brand can normally produce this within days. One that cannot is probably not authorised, which means your listings are exposed regardless of what happens with this particular gate.

What if you are dropshipping a branded product?

Honestly, there is usually no document that fixes this. If you have no relationship with the brand and are fulfilling from a marketplace listing, no authorization exists to obtain, and continuing to list the product accumulates violations until the shop is suspended.

The realistic options are to switch to unbranded or generic equivalents in the same category, to build a relationship with an actual authorised distributor, or to move to your own brand. That last option is more accessible than it sounds and it removes this entire category of problem permanently.

How do you check brand risk before you source?

This problem is entirely preventable at the research stage and almost entirely unfixable afterwards, which makes the check worth building into your routine.

Before committing to a product, look at who is currently selling it. If the only shops selling a branded item are the brand’s own store and one or two others, authorization is being enforced and you will need paperwork. If dozens of unrelated shops are listing it, either the brand is not registered yet or enforcement is coming, and being early to that enforcement is not a good position.

Also check whether listings for the product have been disappearing. A product with high sales velocity and shops that keep vanishing from the results is a product where enforcement is actively running.

Pro tip

Unbranded equivalents in the same category often outperform the branded original on TikTok Shop, because the purchase is driven by the video rather than by brand recognition. Before you fight for authorization on a branded item, check the sales data on the generic version. If the generic is moving comparable volume, you have just avoided the entire compliance problem and probably improved your margin.

How long does approval take?

When the document set is complete, review is usually a few business days. When it is incomplete, you enter a cycle of rejection and reupload that can run for weeks. The difference is almost always whether the authorization letter names your entity specifically.

While a listing is gated, it is not selling. If the product is a meaningful share of your revenue, it is worth listing a compliant alternative in parallel rather than waiting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell a brand without authorization if I bought it legitimately?

First-sale principles vary by jurisdiction, but TikTok’s platform rules operate independently of that. If the brand is registered and enforcing, you need the documents regardless of how legitimately you acquired stock.

Does a supplier invoice count as authorization?

No. An invoice proves purchase, not permission. You generally need both.

What if the brand refuses to authorize me?

Then you cannot list it. Brands control distribution deliberately, and a refusal is a business decision you cannot appeal through TikTok.

Can I use one letter across multiple shops?

Only if it names each entity. A letter naming one shop does not cover another, even if you own both.

Do I need authorization for my own brand?

You need to prove ownership, usually with a trademark registration matching your entity. Once accepted this is a one-time setup.

What happens if I ignore the requirement?

Listings stay gated, and if a rights holder complains, violations accumulate against your shop health. Repeat IP violations escalate faster than most other categories.

What to do next

If you have a real supplier relationship, request the letter today with the specifics listed above, and check your existing catalogue for other branded items before they get swept. If you are dropshipping branded goods with no relationship, treat this error as an early warning rather than an obstacle, and move the catalogue before the violations start.
