TikTok Shop Packaging Requirements and Guidelines 2026

Delzonic

Short answer: TikTok Shop does not publish one universal packaging rulebook, but the requirements that actually get enforced are consistent: the shipping label must be scannable and unobstructed, the parcel must survive normal transit, prohibited and restricted goods carry extra packaging rules, and nothing on the outside may mislead about the contents. The rules that cost sellers money are not written down as packaging rules at all. They show up as damage claims, disputes and a falling review average.

Most sellers read this question as a compliance question. It is really a margin question. Packaging decides your damage rate, your dispute rate and a meaningful share of what buyers write in reviews, and all three feed back into how much reach the platform gives you.

What does TikTok Shop actually require?

The hard requirements are narrower than people expect. The label has to be printed clearly, attached flat, and left unobstructed by tape across the barcode. Parcels must be sealed so contents cannot escape or be tampered with in transit. Dimensions and weight must match what you declared, because carriers reweigh and a mismatch produces surcharges that come out of your margin.

Beyond that, category rules take over. Liquids, aerosols, batteries, sharps and perishables each carry their own handling and labelling requirements that come from the carrier and from shipping regulation rather than from TikTok itself. Getting those wrong is how a shipment gets rejected at the depot rather than flagged in Seller Center.

Item type Packaging requirement What goes wrong
Standard goods Sealed mailer or box, label flat and scannable Tape over the barcode causes scan failures and lost tracking
Fragile Internal void fill, item not touching the outer wall Damage claims that you lose because the packing was inadequate
Liquids and cosmetics Leakproof seal plus a secondary barrier One leak damages the whole parcel and every item in it
Batteries and electronics Carrier specific labelling, often restricted Rejected at the depot, not flagged in advance
Apparel Poly mailer is fine, moisture barrier for light colours Transit marking on white fabric becomes a return
Anything above roughly 15kg Double wall box, reinforced seams Box failure in transit, contents lost entirely

Can I use branded packaging?

Yes, and it is one of the few places where a small seller can visibly outclass a large one. The constraint is that branding must not obstruct the shipping label, must not imply an endorsement or partnership you do not have, and must not misrepresent what is inside.

The trap is inserts. A card thanking the buyer is fine. A card that offers a discount in exchange for a five star review, or that pushes buyers to order from you off platform next time, is not. Both are enforced, and review incentivisation in particular is one of the faster routes to a violation.

The insert rule most sellers get wrong

You may ask for a review. You may not condition anything on the review being positive, and you may not offer compensation for leaving one. “We would love your honest feedback” is fine. “Leave a five star review for 10 percent off” is a violation, and it is visible to TikTok the moment a buyer photographs the card in a complaint. See responding to reviews for what you can legitimately do instead.

What does packaging actually cost you when it is wrong?

Run the arithmetic rather than treating this as a soft issue. On a product with a 15 percent net margin, a single damage claim wipes out the profit from roughly six clean sales. Underpacking to save 30 cents a parcel across a thousand orders saves 300 dollars and pays for itself only if your damage rate stays below roughly one in two hundred. Most underpacked fragile goods do considerably worse than that.

You can work the real number for your own product with our TikTok Shop fee and profit calculator. Once you know your actual margin after platform fees, affiliate commission and shipping, the packaging decision stops being about cost and becomes about risk.

How does packaging affect reviews and reach?

More than most sellers realise, because packaging complaints do not read as packaging complaints. They read as “arrived damaged”, “looked cheap”, “not as described”. Those land in your review text, drag the average down, and the average feeds the ranking that decides how much the algorithm shows your listing.

On TikTok Shop specifically there is a second effect. Buyers film unboxings. A parcel that opens well is content that promotes your product for free. A parcel that arrives crushed is content that does the opposite, and it travels further.

Pro tip

Before committing to packaging for a product, read the one star and two star reviews on the same product sold by other shops. Damage and presentation complaints are extremely product specific, and the sellers ahead of you have already paid to learn what breaks in transit. If three competing listings all mention the same failure, that is your packaging spec written for you.

What about the shipping label itself?

Label problems create more support tickets than packaging problems. Print at full size rather than scaling to fit, attach it flat on the largest surface, never tape across the barcode, and remove or fully cover any old labels if you are reusing boxes. A label that cannot be scanned becomes a parcel with no tracking, and a parcel with no tracking is a dispute you will lose. Our guide to TikTok Shop shipping labels covers the print settings in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok Shop provide packaging?

Not for standard seller fulfilled orders. If you use Fulfilled by TikTok, the warehouse handles outbound packaging, but inbound shipments to the warehouse still have to meet their receiving requirements.

Can I reuse boxes?

Yes, provided the box is structurally sound and every previous label and barcode is removed or completely covered. Partially covered old barcodes are a common cause of misrouting.

Are poly mailers allowed?

Yes, and for apparel and soft goods they are usually the right choice. They are the wrong choice for anything rigid, fragile, or liquid.

Do I need to include an invoice in the parcel?

Not generally for domestic orders. Cross border shipments have their own customs documentation requirements that sit outside TikTok’s rules.

Can I put my own website on the packaging?

Branding is fine. Actively directing buyers to purchase off platform next time is not, and it is treated as circumventing the marketplace.

What happens if a parcel arrives damaged?

It normally lands on the seller unless carrier fault can be evidenced. Photographs of your packing process on high value orders are the cheapest insurance available.

The version worth acting on

Pick the packaging spec from the failure modes in your category’s existing reviews rather than from a general guideline, keep the label flat and scannable, and drop any insert that ties a reward to a rating. That covers the enforcement risk and most of the margin risk at the same time.
