TikTok Shop Features and How It Works (2026)

Delzonic

Short answer: TikTok Shop is a storefront built inside TikTok, so buying happens without leaving the app. Products can be bought from four places: a video, a livestream, the Shop tab, and a seller’s own product page. That matters more than any feature list, because which of those four is actually generating a product’s sales is the difference between a business you can build and one that belongs to a creator who has already moved on. Sellers pay a 6% referral fee in the US with no separate transaction fee, and set their own affiliate commission, usually 5 to 25%.

The four places a sale can happen

Surface How the buyer arrives What it depends on
Video Product tagged in a short video That video continuing to be pushed
LIVE Product pinned during a livestream Streaming hours and the host
Shop tab Browsing and search inside TikTok Your listing, price and rating
Product page Direct link or shop profile Existing demand for you

Read that table as a risk ladder rather than a feature list. Video and LIVE revenue is borrowed: it exists while someone keeps posting. Shop tab and product page revenue is earned: it keeps arriving because people are looking for the thing you sell.

The one question worth asking about any product

Where did its revenue actually come from? A product doing $80,000 a month with almost all of it behind one creator video is one creator away from zero. A product doing $30,000 spread across the Shop tab and a dozen creators is a far safer bet at half the headline number.

Who does what

Three roles, and people conflate them constantly.

Sellers own the products. They list, hold or source inventory, ship, handle returns and customer messages, and carry the account health consequences if any of that slips.

Affiliates own nothing. They pick products from the affiliate marketplace, make content, and earn a commission on sales they generate. No inventory, no returns, no platform fees.

Creators is the broader term, and a creator may be an affiliate, may have brand deals, or may run their own shop. The label describes the audience, not the commercial arrangement.

A full breakdown of the economics is in our guide to seller versus affiliate.

What does it cost to sell?

Cost Who pays Amount
Referral fee Seller 6% in the US, 5% on selected jewellery
Transaction fee Nobody None, payment processing is inside the referral fee
Affiliate commission Seller 5 to 25%, you set it
Shipping and returns Seller Varies
Ads Optional Varies

The absence of a separate transaction fee is genuinely unusual and makes the platform cut smaller than most marketplaces. New US sellers who make a first sale within 60 days of onboarding can get a reduced 3% rate for 30 days. The expensive part of selling here is not TikTok’s fee, it is inventory you bought before you knew it would move.

The features that actually matter day to day

Product listings with video attached. A listing is not a static page. Videos featuring the product appear on it, which means your listing quality and creator content compound rather than sitting separately.

The affiliate marketplace. Where sellers publish commission rates and creators pick what to promote. Your rate is competing against every other seller’s rate for creator attention, so it functions as a bid rather than a cost to minimise.

LIVE selling. Products pinned during a stream with real time purchasing. It rewards streaming hours and consistency rather than reach, which makes it a different job to short form content.

Shop tab and search. The part that behaves like a conventional marketplace. This is where listing optimisation, price and rating do the work, and it is the revenue that keeps arriving when you stop posting.

Account health. Not a feature you use, but the system that decides whether your listings keep getting shown. Since July 2026 this runs on the Account Health Rating rather than the old violation points, and it is worth understanding before it becomes urgent. See violations and ban triggers.

Pro tip

If you are starting out, ignore LIVE entirely for the first month. It is the most time expensive surface and the hardest to be good at cold. Video plus a well built listing will teach you what sells, and you can add streaming once you know which products deserve the hours.

How a sale actually flows

One. A buyer sees the product, in a video, a stream, or by browsing the Shop tab.

Two. They buy inside TikTok. No redirect, no external checkout, which is the entire reason conversion here differs from social traffic sent to an outside store.

Three. The seller ships within the committed window. Late dispatch is measured and feeds your account health.

Four. The return window runs. Commissions and payouts settle after it closes, so there is a lag between the sale and the money.

Five. The review lands, and it affects both future conversion and your metrics.

Frequently asked questions

How does TikTok Shop work for sellers?

You list products, they become buyable from videos, livestreams and the Shop tab, and you handle fulfilment and returns. TikTok takes 6% in the US and you pay any affiliate commission you set.

Is TikTok Shop free to use?

There is no subscription. You pay the referral fee on sales, plus commission if you use affiliates.

Do I need followers to sell on TikTok Shop?

No. Sellers do not need an audience because sales can come from the Shop tab and from affiliates promoting your products.

What is the Shop tab?

The browsing and search surface inside TikTok, which behaves much more like a conventional marketplace than the video feed does.

How long do payouts take?

After the return window closes, so budget for the lag rather than expecting same week money.

What is the difference between TikTok Shop and TikTok ads?

Shop is the storefront and checkout. Ads are paid distribution you can point at your listings. They are separate systems that work together.

Where to start

Whichever role you pick, the first useful skill is reading whether a product is currently selling rather than whether it once sold. Install the Delzonic Chrome extension and price, sales, revenue, rating and an AI summary of the reviews appear on any TikTok Shop listing, free.
