What Is GMV on TikTok Shop? GMV vs Revenue vs Payout (2026)
Short answer: GMV is the total value of everything sold through your TikTok Shop before any fees, refunds or cancellations come out. It is a top line volume number, not money in your bank. A shop doing $100,000 in GMV typically settles somewhere between $70,000 and $85,000 after commission, affiliate payouts and returns.
GMV is the first number TikTok shows you and the number every case study leads with, which is exactly why it is misread so often. Sellers quote GMV when they mean profit, and buyers of courses hear “six figure shop” without hearing that the operator kept a fraction of it. This guide separates GMV from the three numbers that sit underneath it.
What does GMV actually stand for on TikTok Shop?
GMV stands for Gross Merchandise Value. It is the sum of the order value of every order placed in a period, counted at the price the buyer agreed to pay. TikTok counts an order into GMV when the order is created and paid, not when it ships and not when it settles.
That timing matters more than the definition. An order placed on the last day of the month counts in that month’s GMV even if it ships in the next one, gets returned three weeks later, and never becomes revenue at all.
What is included in TikTok Shop GMV?
GMV includes the product price and, depending on the report you are reading, shipping paid by the buyer. It includes orders that later get cancelled or refunded, until TikTok restates the figure. It includes sales driven by every channel: affiliate videos, LIVE sessions and the product card on your own profile.
What it does not include is your cost of goods, your ad spend, TikTok’s commission, the affiliate commission you agreed to pay, or shipping you subsidised.
GMV vs revenue vs payout: what is the difference?
These three get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Here is the chain from a buyer clicking buy to money arriving.
| Term | What it measures | Deductions already taken | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMV | Total order value placed | None | Seller Center overview, most third-party tools |
| Net GMV | GMV minus cancellations and refunds | Returns, cancellations | Seller Center after the return window closes |
| Revenue | What you actually earned on the sale | Platform commission, affiliate commission, transaction fee | Your own P&L, not a TikTok field |
| Payout | Cash transferred to your bank | All of the above plus withheld amounts and adjustments | Seller Center finance, on the payout schedule |
A worked example on a $30 product
Sell 100 units at $30 and your GMV is $3,000. Six get returned, so net GMV is $2,820. Take off roughly 8 percent platform commission and a 15 percent affiliate commission on the affiliate-driven half, and you are near $2,300. Subtract $9 cost of goods per delivered unit and you are at roughly $1,450 gross profit before ads. The headline number was $3,000. The number that pays your rent was less than half of it.
Why is my payout so much lower than my GMV?
Four things sit between the two, and they compound rather than add.
- Platform commission. Taken as a percentage of order value, by category. See TikTok Shop fees explained for the current structure.
- Affiliate commission. Only on affiliate-attributed orders, but that is a large share of most shops. Platform-wide, affiliate content drives roughly 42 percent of GMV.
- Returns and refunds. Deducted after the fact, which is why a strong month can be revised downward weeks later.
- Payout timing and holds. Funds release on a schedule rather than instantly. How TikTok Shop payouts work covers the release windows.
How does TikTok Shop calculate GMV in Seller Center?
Seller Center reports GMV against the order creation date and splits it by source. You will see it broken into LIVE GMV, video GMV and product card GMV, which is the most useful cut TikTok gives you for free. It tells you whether your sales are coming from creator content, from live selling, or from people arriving at your listing directly.
Those three behave completely differently, and a shop that looks healthy on total GMV can be entirely dependent on one creator. We break that down in TikTok Shop revenue by channel.
Is the GMV in third-party tools the same number?
No, and it is important to know why. TikTok does not publish per-product sales publicly. Every research tool, including ours, estimates GMV from observable signals such as review velocity, listing sales counters, video performance and price. Estimates are directionally reliable for comparing two products and less reliable as an absolute figure for one product.
Use estimated GMV to rank and to spot direction. Use your own Seller Center figure for anything financial. Our TikTok Shop sales estimator guide explains what the estimate can and cannot see.
Pro tip
When you are judging someone else’s product, GMV over a fixed window is far less informative than the direction of that GMV. A flat 7 day figure sitting under a large 30 day figure usually means the run is already over and you are looking at the tail, not the opportunity.
Why does GMV matter if it is not money in the bank?
Because it is the only number that is comparable across shops and products. Your margin is private, your cost of goods is private, your ad efficiency is private. GMV is the shared unit for asking whether a product is moving at all, whether a competitor is growing, and whether a category is worth entering.
It also drives things you care about operationally. Category ranking, eligibility for some platform programmes, and how seriously creators treat your collaboration requests all track volume rather than profit.
How big is TikTok Shop GMV in 2026?
For context on the scale you are competing inside:
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Global GMV, first half of 2026 | Around $50.3 billion, up roughly 92 percent year on year |
| US GMV, first half of 2026 | Around $11.8 billion |
| Global GMV, full year 2025 | Around $66 billion |
| Global GMV, 2026 projection | Above $112 billion |
| LIVE share of GMV, 2026 | About 26 percent, up from about 14 percent in 2024 |
These are third-party estimates and platform disclosures rather than audited accounts, so treat them as scale indicators. More in our TikTok Shop statistics roundup.
What should I track instead of GMV?
Track GMV for direction, then track the numbers that decide whether the volume is worth having: contribution margin per unit, return rate by product, affiliate commission as a share of affiliate GMV, and the share of your GMV that depends on your single biggest creator. If that last number is above half, you do not have a shop, you have one relationship.

Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok Shop GMV include shipping?
It depends on the report. Buyer-paid shipping is typically included in order value, while shipping you subsidise is a cost rather than a deduction from GMV. Check the specific report definition in Seller Center before reconciling anything.
Does GMV include cancelled orders?
Initially yes. Cancellations and refunds are netted off later, which is why last month’s GMV can change after you have already reported it.
Is GMV the same as turnover for tax purposes?
No. Your taxable figure is based on what you actually earned, not gross order value. See TikTok Shop taxes and 1099-K reporting and speak to an accountant for your situation.
What is a good GMV for a new TikTok Shop?
There is no threshold that means success, because a $20,000 GMV month on thin margin can lose money while a $4,000 month on strong margin does not. If you want benchmarks anyway, how much you can make in your first month has realistic ranges.
Where do I find GMV in Seller Center?
The overview dashboard shows it for your selected date range, and the analytics section breaks it down by channel and by product. Our TikTok Shop analytics guide walks through each report.
Seeing GMV on products you do not own
Your own GMV is in Seller Center. The harder question is the GMV of a product you are considering, before you commit inventory to it. The Delzonic Chrome extension puts estimated sales and revenue directly on any TikTok Shop listing page, free, with no setup. Paid plans add the historical trend so you can see whether that number is climbing or already past its peak.
